Vegetarian Pepperoni Pizza The Kids Will Love

I’ll start off this post and say I’m not a huge fan of homemade or u-bake pizza.  It never quite tastes the same as pizza parlor pizza, especially in New York.  I LOOOOVE New York thin crust pizza!!  Anyway, over the last few months I’ve been experimenting with homemade pizza simply to find a decent tasting, easy & quick to make, less expensive alternative that our son will like.

Since we’re not meat eaters in this family, I crafted a vegetarian pepperoni pizza that our son actually loves.  Mind you, he just started liking pizza about six months ago so his palate hasn’t developed the taste for a fine piece of pizza.  However, since he likes it, I’m saying it’s a winner because he is one of the pickiest eaters on the planet (along with every other kid)!  By the way, the adults in the household think it’s pretty good for homemade pizza.


1 package Trader Joe’s Garlic & Herb Pizza Dough
15 ounce can tomato sauce (I buy an organic sauce)
1 package Tofurkey Pepperoni Slices (vegan)
6 ounces grated mozzarella cheese (I use a vegan brand)
cooking spray & all-purpose flour

Gather all your ingredients.  If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in your town, find a pizza dough that has lots of herbs.  TJ’s version has oregano, sage, thyme, basil, rosemary, and garlic (powder).  Honestly, this dough is what makes the pizza.  It has such a wonderful flavor that I don’t have to add any spices to the tomato sauce.  It’s all in the dough!!

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.  Once you remove the dough from the bag (with a dusting of flour on your hands otherwise you’ll have sticky dough fingers) and place it on a lightly floured work surface, you have to let it rest for 20 minutes.  In the meantime, open the can of sauce, grate your cheese, and lightly spray your baking sheet with the cooking spray.

The directions on the bag recommend rolling out the dough to a 12″ diameter.  I personally like my dough thinner so I usually split it in half and make two 12″ rounds.  However, I couldn’t find my second pizza pan so I had to pull out a baking sheet.  I much prefer the pizza pans with the holes because the crust gets crispier.  A pizza stone works great too!  Anyway, roll out the dough to your preferred thickness and place on a lightly sprayed pizza pan, cookie sheet, or stone.

I tend to like more sauce than the average person so I use a little more than half the can of tomato sauce.  This can make the dough a little ‘wet’ which is why I prefer the pizza pans with the holes.

Place the grated cheese on next, then the pepperoni.  Place in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until cheese bubbles and crust is golden brown.

My apologies for not taking a more appetizing picture of the final product.  The family was starving so I was rushing to get dinner served.  Trust me, it tastes much better than picture is portraying.

From start to finish it takes 35-40 minutes mostly because you have to let the dough rest.  This is a pretty quick and definitely easy meal to make, and one I know my son is going to gobble up with no complaints.  Success!
